MEMENTO MORI / MEMENTO VIVERE

In the years 2018 to 2019, contact with nature was intensified, causing daydreams that brought some understanding of life cycles to consciousness.

I was allowing myself to learn from the pedagogical nature that so well uses perfect didactics, just look at it.

Each piece itself is a death/life/death process. Initially there is the clay, which is apparently dead, extracted from living nature, which in contact with the artist's hands generates movement and is transformed into a new image. At another time, when the work is before the viewer, the cycle begins again and then it will generate new life, which in this contact will apprehend a new meaning.

At that moment came:

RE-FLORES-SER  (2019)

A series composed of 4 sculptures, leaves shaped in bandages soaked in cement, with a metal structure, cold hard material used in constructions that often takes the place of nature, fixed on a demolition wood base, completed in 2019.

# Spring - Blossoming.

# Summer - Consistency.

# Autumn - Resistance .

# Winter - Elder.

Lamento de Nhandecy (single piece) 2019

The inspiration for Lamento de Nhandecy came from the feeling generated by observing the peaks of burning in the Amazon causing immense damage. A feeling of sadness emanated in the air, a deep lament of pain caused by the fires of our great mother Nhandecy. I was taken by this feeling that spilled over through my hands, giving shape to a female figure crying her wounds on a piece of trunk that was falling apart in flames.

This modeling was done on a hard, rough material that recorded the marks of cuts and abrasions. “Bandages soaked in cement”. Almost like tampons to stop this pain.

The demolition wood dyed red so that this sadness was engraved in his soul. “Encaustic”, a process in which natural beeswax, resin extracted from crystallized plant sap (the blood of trees) and pigments are used. Using your own blood to support the flame of the fire that burns and records the pain in your own body, caused by the disrespect of the son who dismantles the mother who gives him life.

Sculpture modeled in cement and cotton bandage, fixed in demolition wood dyed using the encaustic technique. Measurements: 34cm (h) x 30 x 14cm

Phoenix (single piece) 2020

Phoenix man rising from the ashes of planet earth as if to announce a new cycle, after the destruction of nature caused by humanity itself.

High temperature glazed terracotta sculpture based on molten glass. Measurements: 40cm(h) x 35cm in diameter

“Memento Mori/ Memento Vivere”

These reflections gave me questions about what really lives, what remains... Thus, an awareness of a timeline began and the “Memento Mori/ Memento Viveri” movement began to appear in images.

Latin expression that means: “Remember that you are mortal / Remember to live”.

In 2020 - 2021, at the time of the pandemic, with isolation, many losses and the presence of constant death, it provoked a movement of deep reflection.

The arts produced from that period are full of dual and contrasting feelings: death and life. We are beings in transformation, everything is a cycle, after the day comes the night, after the night comes the day; spring, summer, autumn and winter. One needs to die to be reborn.

"O Elo" (2021)

“O Elo”, represents the existential chain of evolution, this piece was modeled during the Corona Virus  2020-2021 pandemic. It is part of the Mento Mori / Memento Vivere movement.

Everything is cycle. You have to die to be reborn, you have to know how to live to carry learning in your soul. In every minute the cycle of life happens, in everything and everywhere, offering wisdom, it is up to us to observe and apprehend.

On Allan Kardec's tombstone, there is engraved the apothegm that summarizes the Kardecian doctrine of justice and progress:

“NAÎTRE, MOURIR, RENAÎTRE ENCORE ET PROGRESSER SANS CESSE TELLE EST LA LOI”

“To be born, to die, to be reborn again and to progress always

it's the law"

Reconstituted marble sculpture.

Measurements: 33cmX 20cmX29cm (h)

The beginning of the inspiration for the Clave de Sol began at the end of 1998 when I watched a dance performance by Mikhail Baryshnikov, at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, dancing to the sound of his heartbeat. As if he danced life!

In the period of the pandemic in the 2nd half of 2020, in one of my first periods of seclusion, listening to classical music Bach and Beethoven, the clay in my hands, the present nature, images from 1998 projected in my thoughts, the shape in the clay of the Mrs Clef of Treble female body with the right arm up, hand facing the sky, left arm down, hand curled inwards like a root.

The link between heaven and earth, the sacred and the human linked through music.

Mrs. Treble Clef was ready in 2021 in

reconstituted marble.

“Mrs Treble Clef” (2021)

The transformation, the change of form to evolve is the goal. The attainment of the Goal, the transformation of form, can only take place through love.

The piece that is part of the series "Memento Mori / Memento Vivere", an expression that comes from Latin and means:

“remember that you are mortal / remember to live”, represents the current of evolution, where we are constantly transformed by birth, life, death and love.

“Meta-Amor-Fose” (2021)

This is also part of the “Memento Mori / Memento Vivere” series. Inspiration came through reading the book of the Bible Revelation Chapter 12,1-10: a great sign was seen in the sky: “A woman clothed with the sun, pregnant, with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars over the head”...

All this information began to form a dance of images in my unconscious, my hands only managed to release it together with the clay, at the beginning of 2020.

This feeling of the sacred feminine of Sra Vestida de Sol, the troubled period at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, intensified the construction of the piece.

The finishing process in the 1st half of 2021 was with encaustic, a process formerly used in Egypt, in death masks with beeswax, pigments and resin. It heats and burns; mark and engrave. Very suitable for this time of so much pain, loss and our death masks that mark the soul.

I was resistant to the intense colors and the baroque piece, very different from my way of modeling, until on the way back home (on 7/2/2021) I looked in the rearview mirror of the car and saw the autumn evening, with those colors; the sun, the orange red of fire and the sky, the royal blue of the universe, I saw Mrs. of the Apocalypse whispering in my ear: “Memento Mori - Memento Vivere”.

Reflected Link /
Link's Tido Reflexes

The work “Elo Reflectido / Re-Flexos-Tido do Elo” was cast in plaster in 2022 and finished in 2023. It is one of the pieces that make up the “Memento Mori / Memento Vivere” movement. Imagined from the play “Elo”, whose meaning is to be the link in the existential chain of evolution.

His name holds the deep meaning:

RE: The prefix RE is of Latin origin, it carries the meaning of repetition. We repeat a cycle at every moment of life: MOVEMENT - LIFE.

FLEXOS: Gesture of bending over, being able to be bent. To form the cycle of evolution, we need to bow before the other, in a gesture of reverence and respect. While we support the relationship with the other with our hand, the hand of the other impels us to  keep the link closed, forming the relationship of unity: HUMILITY - RESPECT.

TIDO: That one managed to possess, to have. Attitudes that give form, knowledge, that

propagate, causing transformations:

RESPONSIBILITY - COMMITMENT.
